In the hot, humid days of summer, we switch to growing head lettuce, particularly the varieties known as "Summer Crisp," which are the most heat-tolerant. They're related to iceberg, but have a more open head and more flavor.
Storage
Store lettuce in a plastic bag, in the refrigerator. Best eaten within a few days but will keep for longer, up to a week. Please note that we typically don’t wash the salad greens we pack for you unless they’re very dirty, because they store better unwashed. If you choose to wash your salad greens, invest in a salad spinner so you can be sure to get them truly dry. (A wet salad always disappoints.)
Cooking Tips
Head lettuce makes a beautiful salad, especially with any type of homemade dressing. If you want to branch out from simple salads, try a French salade composée with eggs, potatoes, and olives, a chopped salad, or use your lettuce leaves as wraps for your favorite hummus or other dip. Head lettuce also works great in a BLT or other sandwich and is even delicious cooked into soup or braised!
